Uber, Ola and Rapido look like the same app with different colours. Underneath, each is three apps and a real-time trip engine that has to match a rider to a driver in seconds, agree on a fare, keep both sides informed, and settle money correctly at the end of every trip. This guide covers what to build, the parts that take the most effort, and what it costs in India.
The three apps
Rider app
- Pickup and drop with saved places, fare estimate before booking, vehicle types.
- Live driver location and ETA, trip sharing with family, an SOS button.
- UPI, cards, wallets and cash; receipts, ratings and lost-item support.
Driver app
- Go online or offline, trip requests with an accept timer, navigation to pickup and drop.
- OTP-verified trip start, trip history, earnings, incentives and payouts.
- Document upload and verification before a driver can go online.
Admin panel
- Fare rules per city and vehicle type, zones, surge rules and promotions.
- Driver onboarding and approvals, live trips map, complaints, refunds and payouts.
The trip engine: where the effort goes
Live location
Drivers' phones send their position every few seconds while online. The backend keeps the latest positions in a fast store (Redis with geospatial queries works well) so it can find nearby drivers instantly without hammering the database.
Matching
When a rider books, offer the trip to the best nearby driver with a short accept window; if they decline or time out, offer it to the next. Log every attempt — it is how you find areas and hours that are short of drivers.
A trip state machine
Requested, accepted, arrived, started, completed, cancelled — each state pushed to both apps in real time over WebSockets. Explicit states make cancellations, disputes and refunds straightforward instead of guesswork.
Fares and cancellations
Model fares per city and vehicle type: base fare, per-kilometre and per-minute rates, minimums, waiting charges and cancellation fees. Keep the rules in the admin so operations can change them without a release.
Maps: plan for the running cost
Every trip uses map services — geocoding, place search, routes, distance and ETAs. These are billed by usage, so the cost grows with every trip. Cache what you can, request routes only when needed, and estimate the map cost per trip before you set fares.
Safety features riders expect
- Verified drivers with documents checked before they go online.
- OTP to start the trip, live trip sharing, and an SOS button that alerts your support team.
- Masked calls between rider and driver, and a full trip record for every complaint.
What it costs in India
| Scope | What you get | Timeline | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic MVP | Rider and driver apps, admin, one city, one vehicle type | 4–5 months | ₹10–15 lakh |
| Full-featured app | Multiple vehicle types, scheduled rides, promotions, richer admin | 5–7 months | ₹15–25 lakh |
| Enterprise platform | Multi-city operations, corporate accounts, advanced dispatch and analytics | 7–12 months | ₹25–50 lakh+ |
These match our Uber-like app cost guide, which breaks the numbers down further.
What belongs in version one — and what can wait
Version one: booking with a fare estimate, matching with re-assignment, live tracking, OTP trip start, payments, driver earnings and payouts, ratings, SOS and trip sharing, and an admin for fares, drivers, trips and support. Make the driver app available in the language your drivers read — in most Indian cities that means Hindi or the local language from the first release.
These can wait until the first city works:
- Scheduled rides, rentals and outstation trips.
- Corporate accounts and invoicing.
- Ride pooling.
- Rider passes, subscriptions and wallets.
- Multiple vehicle types beyond the first.
How to launch
- One city, one vehicle type. Bike taxis or autos for short urban trips; cabs for airports and longer rides.
- Driver supply first. Onboard and train drivers, and make sure they earn in the first week.
- Check the rules. Aggregator licensing differs by state and vehicle type — confirm yours before launch.
- Watch three numbers: time to match, cancellation rate and trips per driver per day.
Why real-time experience matters here
A ride-hailing app lives or dies on real-time systems. We build them across our portfolio — live ball-by-ball scores for Cricket Winner and live delivery tracking for grocery and medicine apps such as Mappu and Abomed.
See our Uber clone, Ola clone and Rapido clone pages for the feature lists, or tell us about your city and fleet — the first call is free.
